another I don't know the answer
I received a Ruger AR 556 model 8500. I have never shot an AR since
I left vn 40 some odd years ago My question is: will it hurt or ruin the chamber, barrel and the fire control parts including extractor, and ejection, if I shoot the steel case ammunition in it?

My friends and I have put many rounds of steel case thru several different AR platforms and none have suffered from it. The polymer coating on the casing can build up in the chamber and slow extraction on some and it takes some work to clean them out - get one of the chamber and locking recess brushes like Brownell's sells. The stuff tends to be dirty and soot will build up in the DGI systems, but that's just more cleaning. Best to use in a marked "5.56" chamber. 0 -
i might stick to the silver bear 0 -
Your barrel will probably wear faster. Read the steel case vs brass case tests done by Lucky Gunner. It's the bullet not the case that causes this.
They did note the money you saved by shooting steel case was more than the cost of a new barrel.0 -
Your rifle will run, just fine, and suffer no long term effects, from shooting steel cased stuff, just keep up a regular maintenance schedule, and like always...clean well, after a good range session.
Enjoy your new machine...it is certainly a step above what you were force fed 40 some years ago, in VN.0
