Toad, if that is a Model 1892, then it cannot be a 38-55. That cartridge is to long for that action. If it says 38 WCF, that is 38-40, and indeed will fit that 1892.

The 1894 in 32-40 was made most likely in the first quarter of 1903. If the second specimen is a 1982, it was made in the early part of 1899. However, if it is a 1894, that would match the 38-55 chambering, it was made in the first half of 1901. Neither one would achieve antique status, according to my reference material.

I am sure Bert can tell you what month and day they were born.

I'm not Bert, but, I do have the a copy of his book, The Red Book of Winchester Values. Your model 1894 was shipped in 1903, the model 1892 was shipped in 1899.
I'm thinking you have the calibers backward, I don't think Winchester built a model 1892 in 38-55. The model 92 was a pistol caliber rifle, primarily. The 38-55 is the father case, as it where, to the 30 Win(30-30), the 32 Win Special and several others. The round is too long to be chambered in the model 1892.

Even with the calibers reversed the Model 1892 was offered in 32 WCF which is also known as 32-20. Todd has the caliber as 32-40 which is definitely a Model 1894 variant. SN 109523 is a 38 WCF OB Model 1892 rifle which previously sold on Gunrunner.

If possible Todd I would like to add the 1892 rifle into my survey if I could please get some photos of the gun.

    Thanks so much

Thanks Tim and WD. I made a mistake in the 38 being a 55 and not a 40, as it definitely has a short action on it. Thanks again.
