22 mag ammo ??
Local classified ad has a guy who WTB a S&W model 648 revolver in 22 mag. Someone posted that he needs to find an ammo source for revolver 22 mag ammo rather than the rifle stuff. I know the 648 is WMR, but is there such a thing as revolver 22 mag ammo?

Never heard of such a thing. But, there's really no practical reason for owning a .22 mag handgun, as you really need close to a 16" barrel to burn all the powder in a .22 mag round; with a 4" or 6" barrel, muzzle energy is not that much greater than a .22 LR.
Any S&W handgun in good condition will safely & reliably handle any .22 mag ammo.

The Speer Gold Dot 22 mag was developed to have optimum performance from short barrels. Probably what they mean by "revolver" ammo. Any 22 mag ammo should work fine, some will perform better than others. 0 -
Neal is correct about most of the .22 Mag ammo, being optimised for rifles.
In the last couple of years though. The 30 shot Kel-Tec PMR-30 pistol, has become popular as a personal protection handgun. A number of ammo manufacturers have brought out .22 Mag ammo. Specifically for this pistol, and other short barreled handguns. Hornady Critical Defense and Speer Personal Protection, are 2 of them. My personal favorite, is the CCI 30 grain JHP's. Loaded in the nickel plated cases. 1,500 FPS from a short barreled handgun.0 -
The Hornady Critical Defense 45 grain 22WMR is designed for short barrels. Performs great in my S&W 351PD. 0 -

Even though there is ammo designed for the shorter barreled Kel tec, it is still a 22WMR and will shoot it correct?0 -

Thats correct up to a point. I experimented when I first got mine. Some of the 22 mag ammo, doesn't function well in the Kel-Tec. I will have to dig out my notes. But the impression I got, is some of the stuff loaded specifically for the Mag rifles. Has slower burning powder, causing reliability issues in the Kel-Tec.
With the ammo shortage. Never could get my hands on any of the Hornady, Critical Defense or the Speer Gold Dots. But I was really impressed. With the reliability and accuracy, of the CCI 30 grain JHP's in the nickel plated cases. These are my go-to ammo for the Kel-Tec now.0 -
i know for a fact that it is loud out of a 1" barrel[:0] 0 -
Be sure and try it in low light/dark, also from a low ready hold. 0 -
It's LOUD out of any pistol barrel - ask my audiologist who just fitted my new hearing aids. 0
