Bert said my 94 was pre WW2 and most likely manufactured b'tween '38 and '41, i read his refrence to a WP in an oval thet signifies that the gun has been proofed. My "94" also has 2 more "ovals" at the base of the bbl. What might these signify?

The "BIG MONEY FISH" are down deep.

    Hello

You are correct that the Model 64 receivers were drilled and tapped for a receiver peep. The receivers for the two rifles are essentially the same and it is simple to put a Barrel marked Model 64 onto a Model 94 receiver. What is the serial number of the receiver?

I did not buy the gun so I do not have a serial number. When I seen it was a mismatch barrel and receiver I just put it back on the table. I was just wondering if it could have come from the factory that way or somebody just made up a parts gun.

In my ongoing survey of the Model 64 & 94, I have found at least a few dozen Model 94s with Model 64 barrels on them. In all cases, it was not factory work. If a Model 1894/94 was retuned to the factory for a new barrel, Winchester would have installed a Model 94 barrel.

The receiver being drilled & tapped is not the best way to determine originality. Winchester did not drill and tap the early production Model 64 receivers for a peep sight, and many of the Model 64 rifles in 219 Zipper were not drilled and tapped. The primary clues to look for are the serial number, and the stock configuration.

this gun was at a gun show. the claim was, the seller knew the guy who purchased the gun from a Winchester dealer and it came from the factory that way.

Nearly every seller with a bad gun has a story made up for it[:0] As Charlie mentioned, buy the gun, not the story.
