Winchester Mdl. 75
I have been looking for a model 75 and have been trying to gather as much information as I can before I purchase one. It seems they either have a Lyman or a Redfield sight, but they talk about a variation sight for the government during WW2. I believe I have seen the ones they are talking about, but cannot fined a name, manufactures name on them. Anyone know who made these? And were these sights also put on model 75 that went to the general public? I guess I am also curious why the government wanted this variation?

I can't speak to the government variation, but the factory front sight was nicknamed the "mailbox".
The Winchester 75 in target variation is a wonderful rifle, of course it was also made as the 75 Sporter. It's a bit of a challenge finding one in original condition as folks tended to personalize the. A factory sling is especially difficult to find. My Winchester 75 carries an older Redfield globe and rear peep, but I now mostly use an old Litschert 15X externally adjusted scope.0 -
I too have a model 75 like Doug's, with a 15X Litschert scope. My example was built in 1939, and has the mail box front sight. The only downside is trying to find inserts for the front sight.

Before & during WWII, both the factory front and rear sights of the Model 75 Target version were unique designs of Winchester's own manufacture, quite unlike Lyman or Redfield sights. These were not highly regarded by match shooters, and for many years could be found at gunshows for low prices, having been replaced by the rifles' owners with better sights.
Now, of course, they are collector's items!
Try the Sight Man, Ken Bean of York, Pa. if you want some.0 -
My Model 75 Target had Redfield "Olympic" sights. Deeply regret parting with it, but tuition had to be paid. 0 -
Thank you for the information and history I appreciate it. 0
