From 1923 to the present day. One of the German proof marks will be a date. The old format prior to W W II, was a 2 or 3 digit number. Representing the month and year. After the war they dropped the month. Now it's just the year. In the 1970's they started using alpha letter code, to represent the year.

It has a Crown over the U, I found a 3 digit number 459. I know in the U.S. we go by month, day, year, and in Europe they go by day, month, year. But I still can't make heads or tails then of this number. I hope I don't have to go out and buy an old Enigma machine. LOL.
Thank you all for the help.

"Crown over U", proof mark was last used in 1939. The only way that "459" would work. Is if the digit 5 is actually a 2, or more likely a 3. Look at it real close, using a magnifying glass.

I checked the number again, it is 459, I even removed stock to check for numbers. I spent a good portion of the day today doing research on Mausers ES340-B and I did find what the 459 number is, It is a proof stamp number, according to a book Speeds small bore Mausers. Also read that a lot of serial numbers were given out on orders before rifles were built, so there was a time laps sometimes between orders and manufacture, I don't have a clue how that works. So by going by the serial number charliemeyer said 162xxx 1936, and finding orders of serial numbers 174223 July 1938 to 183997 September 1938, I think I can figure that the rifle I have serial number 170922 was manufactured some time late 1937 early 1938, close enough anyway.
    Again, thank you.
