Savage Model 220A year of manufacture

I have a 410 Shot gun without a serial #. While cleaning it I removed the butt plate and found the #s 44 and a couple stamps, maybe proof marks on the stock. Is the 44 maybe the year it was made? Any ideas? Thanks.

  Made before 1968, if it doesn't have a serial number. 1944 was during the Second World War. Doubtful that Savage was knocking out single barrel, utility grade shotguns. During 44.
