cut and pasted no clue if it is correct

    Hornady 7th Edition...

    Starline Brass
    Federal 100 Primer
    90 gr XTP
    COL: 1.320"

    Blue dot: 7.3 gr (Max)

    Listed Velocity: 1400 fps/CZ-52

added Historical Note not a recommendation. I had a friend that was a Marine sniper in Korea. He carried and used a broomhandle as his side arm. His working ammo was 9mm Sten gun in his 30 Mauser. He fired 1000's and trusted his life to the combo. He showed me recovered bullets 9mm swedged to 30 cal.

The 7.62x25 Mauser load is a bit lighter than the 7.62x25 Tokarev loadings and a lot lighter than the stouter Czech T48 loads so err on the side of caution with the Broomhandle. I would start with a minimum load and work up from there. The C96 was a late-1800's gun built in the days of lesser metallurgy technology and smokeless powders were still in their infancy.

I would just give it the usual pistol load and figure anything extra from the long barrel was gravy. What will you DO with extra pressure/velocity in such a thing anyhow?

As 16" is a much heavier weight to move (the M96 is recoil operated, with a recoiling barrel/breachblock assembly) than the normal pistol loading was intended for, a heavier load is actually indicated.

Back in the day, a special higher pressure loading was offered in Europe for the comparable 7.65 Luger carbines.

9mm is 1/4" approximately shorter, than the original Broomhandle Mauser ammo. The gas blowby in that 1/4", is the only way I could see the pistol holding together.

All the info on the BH Mauser, I've come across over the years. Says that the rectangular link that secures the bolt in the receiver. Is the achilles heel of the BH. If that goes, breaking from to much pressure. The bolt gets blown back into your face. Your buddy was one lucky man!

That link did fail in mine. It fractured & the pieces simply created a very difficult to clear jam. I now have a replacement one made of stainless steel. I was using regular 7.63 X 25 ammo & I assume it simply failed from old age & much usage.

Umm he fired "thousands" of 9mm rounds through a 30 cal Mauser???
More likely he had a BH chambered for the 9mm ("Red 9" carved in grip)

That would be my suspicion as well

    Use regular Mauser 7.63 ammo.
If you've ever fired a standard C96 at dusk or night, there's a large fireball at the muzzle signafying a large amount of unburnt powder exiting the barrel.
Your 16 inch barrel can take advantage of that.

The responses concerning using only the lighter pressure Tokarev reloads is correct - you only need it to function properly. Also, when you clean the Mauser C96 make sure you're by yourself with no possibility of any distractions (i.e., cell phone, tv, computer, ... off) and follow the disassembling and re-assembling instruction precisely. If you mess up the assembling, there is not much hope - lots of grief - few practical remedies.
