Winchester 97 riot gun

Today a friend of mine gave me this shotgun. It was made in 1921 and I assume it is a riot gun because of the lack of a bayonet attachment. It seems to have the grooves for the attachment on the underside of the barrel. Did all of the trench and riot guns have the same cuts on the barrel? It looks like where the cartouche goes on the stock it has been sanded down and either stamped or branded with SPP 44. I wonder if this has to do with being an ex State Police gun or something. Do all of the trench and riot guns have the flaming bomb stamp on the reciever and the barrel except for the earlier production models?

You might check the completed auctions on the GB site. To see if any 97's have been sold recently. Perhaps this would help you get a ball-park value for yours.

22 1/2" barrel is the giveaway in the first sentence of the ad.
    I won't guess a dollar value.

You paid about $100 too much for it in my opinion. What is the serial number on the gun? Most serial number lists on the internet are wrong for the Model 1897. There is a possibility that it is a pre-1899, which would make it a legal "Antique", and it could be shipped directly to your front door versus going through an FFL transfer.
