Close Couple Double Set Trigger Problem
[/URL][/img]Picked up a Winchester 1894 rifle serial # 21,680, with set triggers. The photo shows all the parts I have, several are missing. I don't know what parts are missing or where to find a diagram, and parts. Also are there any words of wisdom for someone who has never worked on set triggers?

Added. I have only had the pleasure of shooting a few Winchester lever guns with either a single or double set triggers. My Newton rifle has my favorite double set ever. Fires practically only from the set, however that can range from quite stiff to look at it wrong. The old Ballard's had nice double sets too.0 -
it doesn't appear to be missing much if you can find the parts to repair it, try asking for parts on the want ad forum you may get lucky. 0 -
Set triggers are the very difficult to diagnose and fix. You have to be part watch maker to get them working. I have fixed many single sets and every one can be a bugger to figure out. The most common problem is they don't drop the hammer on the first try. I have found with the single sets if someone has had it apart before, they can install a pin with a flat side wrong and it wouldn't kick off or they think its worn and replace it with a round pin. Here is a good article about the single set. You might find something that translates to the double set.

I think you need to disassemble the trigger assembly, lay out the parts and rephotograph.
We can then see what is missing.
Not to waste replies, those parts need a serious scrubbing down to bright metal to even know if what you have will function.0 -

I believe I understand how it works and what parts are missing.
This may be wrong but incase someone is interested when the hammer is pulled to the cocked position the toggle is friction activated to bypass the half cock notch. The front trigger is the firing trigger for normal and set positions. The back trigger or set trigger repositions the amount of engagement of the shear to the hammer.
Needing a second wallet made me laugh, sure sounds better that way.0 -
There is a "Fly" in the hammer that allows the sear to bypass the half cock notch. That fly needs to be free without friction from that hardened grease covering your parts.
Clean them up and oil them. You may find you have all the parts.
