I don't know if a standard '98 magazine is going to feed a .284 case correctly, I have my doubts, just throwing this out there. 0 -
Mark at Washougal Mercantile rebarreled a M98 action that I had with a Shilen barrel. It was very well done and reasonably priced. 0 -
I had my Vanguard done recently by Douglas. They put on a 26" .340 barrel in 5A profile and threaded and indexed the muzzle brake at a reasonable price. If you contact them they will be able to quote the price for doing the work you need. MG 1890 has a good point, you might check with the tech staff at Douglas to see if the mag rails need work and if they will do it. 0 -

Although I have several good gunsmiths here in CA that I can use, for work such as re-barreling I send my guns to one of these guys, I'm REALLY picky about the work I have done and they have never failed to deliver exactly what I want, actually they exceed my wants every time:

Oh, you mean those crazy long pistols that people shoot? The ones that it looks like a huge tumor has grown off from the pistol grip? Another guy who specializes in long range rifles is Gordy Gritters in Pella Ia. His work is excellent (so I'm told)but he's a little pricey(for my budget-maybe a drop in the bucket for others) and wait times are long. 0 -

Be aware that this cartridge requires more than just a new barrel and chamber, especially in a Mauser. Your gunsmith of choice should know about opening up the rails correctly, adjusting the feed ramp and the follower all for proper feeding. There will also be some changes to the magazine because of the dimensions of this cartridge, it's fatter than the '06 or x57 cartridges and getting it to feed with 100% reliability is not often an easy task.
