Remigton New Model Army
We just had a Remington New model Army taken on trade. All the research shows this model to be a cap and ball, but this one has been converted. Does anyone know if this is a rimfire or centerfire, and the caliber. I know it started out as a .44 cal. Here is the auction #

Careful measurement is in order. I think I have a few original specimens of the cases somewhere in my stuff. Very thin and small rims.0 -
The ad says THE CYLINDER WAS CHANGED. IT IS CENTERFIRE
The more I google about Remington cartridge conversions, the more confused I get. Flayderman says they were converted to .46 Rimfire, .44 or .45 Centerfire. Frankford Arsenal made a .44 Centerfire meant for use in both Colt and Remington conversions.0 -
I checked, "Cartridges of the World". The only one they have specifically listed for the Remington conversions, is the 46 Short rimfire. It has a loaded length of 1.336, base diameter of .458, neck diameter .458, with bullet diameter of .456. 0 -
I would think if it is an original Vintage conversion I would have higher value but not as a shooter but rather as a collectable "I WOULD NOT SHOOT IT" however ther are many newer /current conversion units made that one could shoot but I would want to do rearch on bore diameter as well as cylinder Chambers 0 -
Rufe:
The .46 rimfire conversions were five shooters.0 -
Gentlemen, Thank you for your help. I to am coming up short on the caliber. A conversion would have only had 5rd cylinder, this one has 6 and is centerfire. The cylinder does not look like a repro, as the finish matches the rest of the firearm. It's on the Auction side for sale. Maybe someone can provide some more info. 0
