In my opinion Springfield builds the better 1911. The Ruger is not a bad gun either so get the one you like better. Good luck

It is definitely the Ruger, hands down. They have the better construction, and are all American made. The frames and possibly the slides from the Springfield are made in the Philippines.

    EDIT
quote:It is simply amazing what you can read on the internet. I don't know anymore where Springfield 1911 frames and slides are made but I've never seen one from the Philippines. I think you will find Imbel in Brazil still produces some of the forged units and maybe all of them with some guns being assembled here in the U.S. We sell and shoot a bunch of 1911's here and really don't see a lot of trouble with any of them even the Philippine guns. The Ruger is a decent gun but Ruger has only been making it for a few years and it was a new platform for them. Mike Fifer, Ruger's CEO told me that he really didn't want to make 1911's, they had no workers trained for the gun and that it was a pain getting set up. I have heard the same from a friend who went to Remington to help them set up for their 1911 program. I think Springfield's lower end 1911 is the best gun for money you can buy. I say this because of the way the gun is fitted which I think is better than the Ruger and for that matter better than the holy Colt. I'm not saying the Ruger is bad just that we handle 1911's everyday and get to compare a lot of them. It's like folks who ride 883 Sporsters and think there're fast which is fine as long as you don't ride other bikes.

WRONG, they are forged in BRAZIL

True fact, that The late 1980's, and 1990's 1911-A1's from Springfield were made at the same plant as the RIA 1911's...in the Philippines. Yes, they were good guns for the money, unless you wanted to change sights, or parts...then you had to order special parts. Same holds true with the Brazilian made guns, from the land of Taurus. The Philippine made guns are actually better in function and fit than the Brazilian made ones. If you are going to work in gun shops/stores, and talk to gun company CEO's, you should stay up on this stuff.

Furthermore, with some of the designs that Strum, Ruger, and Co., have made, the 1911 platform is as simple as the AR-15 platform to manufacture on large scale equipment...so, don't fool yourself.

As far as Remington goes, they got all of their 1911 expertise from Para-USA, who, in itself is a fine example also for the money.

While none of the above listed makes are as accurate, or reliable as those put out by Wilson Combat, or NightHawk Custom, they do not cost $3k-$5k, either.

Bill Ruger only wanted his guns sold to "responsible" people- so if you want to be able to prove that you're responsible, et the Ruger. Everybody else can get the Springfield.

I have no experience with the Sprinfield. I have the Ruger in 1911 and Commander. Of the two I prefer the 1911, it is a bit easier to handle (which is likely true of most or all 1911/Commander pairs) but would not hesitate to buy another Commander. One of my carry guns, I trust my life to it.

I have a POS AMT in stainless steel. Makes for a good under the seat truck gun.

    I'm not fond of shorty's.
