Loose Ammo
Hello,
I hope someone can give me some insight on a concern of mine. I just purchased a Bond Arms Snake Slayer IV. I like the gun and it's fun to shoot however, I recently noticed that when I put ammo into the chamber and close up the gun, you can hear the ammo rattle in there if you shake the gun slightly. Also, my brass comes out blackened all the way down to the rim after firing.
It's designed to shoot both 45 Colt and 410 shells but they both rattle in there. I took a measurement of the ID of the chamber with my digital calipers and it reads .4800. Any idea it that's a normal reading for a chamber on a 45 caliber gun?
I've written Bond through their tech assistance email system twice, but still no response...not even acknowledging they received my question. I've decided to not shoot it until I can get some sort of response so I thought I'd throw it out here in the meantime. Thanks!!

Normally a blacken case is a sign of low pressure with a slow burning powder or low velocity target loads but can also because a large chamber /bore Guns that can shoot different Cartridges are prown to hve over size Chambers /bore so the largest one will chamber and being over sized for the smaller of the two. BOND ARMS
are not target grade match guns I would not worryabout the loose fit or smoked cases.0 -
IIRC, the smallest part of a real {not a .45colt pistol] .410 shotgun chamber is about .463".
The .45 colt chamber should be about .480".
The shotgun shell is more forgiving about chamber size. The .45colt shouldn't be loose in the gun. Specs here...

Thanks for the responses! It appears the bore is good according to the info on the link and the ammo is reload. I'll pick up a box of factory stuff and see what happens.
Yes, it's definitely not a match gun although it's stout and fun to shoot. I plan to get a set of 22LR barrels for it too, it'll make a nice garden gun with .22 shotshells for ammo. quote:Originally posted by babun

added 22 birdshot isn't all that effective, 38 Special or the 45 Colt loaded with shot would be my choice if you didn't want 410 noise and power.0 -
I did give that a lot of thought, especially since I already have a rifle in the .38/.357 caliber and would not need to add yet another caliber to have to keep on the shelf. However, I'm looking for something to plink away the over abundance of sparrows and ground squirrels at close range so the 22 seems to fit the bill. Well Jim, the sparrows drive out all the native songbirds so controlling them is key to keeping bluebirds, swallows & wrens around. Cats do not much care which style of bird they turn into a meal nor could I convince a cat to just stick to the ground squirrels. [:)]quote:Originally posted by jim_lemay

I also have one in 45, 410, I do not have that problem at all. The gun is definitely a handful, but at the 7 yard gong hits almost every time.
I have 2 other barrels for it, .22, 9mm that make it more user friendly, for the wife and her friends have now have an affection to fire it.
The wife wants to get all the different barrels for it.[:D] What is good for her is good for me.[;)]0 -
The 357 SIG might give you the most energy out of that short barrel. 0 -
Are the cases bulged at all after extraction?
It could be a few things that you're hearing.
1. Chambers are oversized and you are in fact hearing them rattle side to side.
2. Handloaded ammo is sized down too far, perhaps using 45 acp dies.
3. As the 45 colt headspaces on the rim, you could have an excessive headspace issue and they are rattling back and forth.
If you don't see a bulge it's probably number 3. If you do it's 1 or 2.0
