MS 1952 Rifle
I promise, last thread on the rifle and my adventure trying to get it with my C and R -
http://forums.GunBroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=655817
The gun store wouldn't do C and R because they "couldn't find it listed under Steyr" in the Blue Book. I tried to explain but was in a little hurry and decided to drop it, am getting a good price on it so what the hell. The rifle is being shipped but my FFL is giving me a price break. He'll do the transfer to me as a C and R.
What I found unusual about the rifle is that it has a swept back bolt, but it's blued, not "in the white". The receiver and barrel are date stamped "53" (I know, should have been a hint) but the floor plate isn't stamped Stoeger, just the small "Steyr" logo. The spacer for the side mount is present, I have a Jaeger side mount to be fitted and a 1950's era Williams side mount specifically for the 52/56 model. There is a front barrel band with screw and an ebony tip forend. The rifle has a double set trigger
From what I read of the Blue Book and MS site my thinking is this is a non-import Model 1952 rifle. I'll try and post pictures when I get the rifle.

Wasn't the model 1952 made up until 1972??
So it could be non c&r....43yo.
Also sounds like a lot of mods to call it a c&R???0 -

The Model 1952 was made until 1956, and the DOM is stamped on the barrel and receiver. What "modifications"? There are none that I know of. My question regarding the bolt and floor plate are regarding it being a European version, not a Stoeger import.0 -
My model 1952 (made in 53) has a swept back blued bolt handle, but then, so does my 1950 (made in 52). I think they probably made "running" changes like Winchester and others. My 1956 and the MCA's have bolts that are non-blued.
My 1953 and 54 Stoeger's catalog lists the rifle version as being available in 9.3x62. I'd love to find one of those!
I think you're right about it not getting to the US through regular channels.0 -
The model 1952 was made till 1971 for sure and maybe into 1972.
Now yours may be older than 50 years, I can't see your gun from here.
It is NOT on the Batf C&R list because not all of them are c&r.
BUT any that are over 50 yo are c&r.
The model that was sold in the later years was the 1952GK.
The model 1956 (1956mc) did not replace it, it was a different style, had a different stock.

Same idea as a winny '94 lever action......the newer 94AE's are not C&R, but a '94 made in 1939 is.0 -

Understood on the "GK" and 94 reference. The rifle I bought is date stamped "53" which I figured would pretty clearly tell them it was +50 years old. And it carries the older stock, although I suppose stocks can be switched out. The "incidentals" such as blued bolt, no drill/tap for top mount and the 257 chambering being dropped in 1960 - some of that was in the BB, some on the MS collectors forum. But no luck. Am just glad they are OK to ship to CA and that my receiving FFL is cutting me a break.0 -
You asked in a post that is now closed whether the model 1952 was d&t for the Williams side mount. Quote from Stoeger's 1957 catalog: "Receiver is NOT drilled and tapped because of variations of screw positions in regular domestic side mount bases." 0 -

Thank you for the info.
Update: Received rifle & disassembled. Bought an "old stock" Williams side mount advertised on "bay" site as being for the MS. Unfortunately the base isn't high enough. When the screw holes of the base are on the receiver flat, the side of the mount and the wheels rub against the side of the receiver ring. To get the wheel & horizontal base above the receiver ring takes the screw holes off the flat area and onto the round side of the receiver. The base looks like the standard SM-71 that's used on Rem 141, Win 71 and others. It's just not tall enough to work.
Edit: Current auction # of the same supposed "MS" mount is 131552350102. I think this is a case of "right box, wrong mount".0 -
