Colt 1st gen
I am in Birmingham looking at a Colt single action made in 1875 .It has no "US" proof marks on it. When did they start making Civilian guns? I was told anything under 34000 serial number was US marked but I cant find any info on that.

Actually, the first 24,000 (not 34,000) models with 7 1/2" barrels were US marked and had slanted address markings.
What are the particulars of the one you're looking at (barrel length, finish, grips, markings)and serial number?0 -
5 1/2 inch, silver front sight, slanted address, 22xxx 0 -

It sounds like a refinished Cavalry model that was reconditioned and converted by Colt into a 5 1/2 inch barrel "Artillery" model in the 1890's. The "US" may have been buffed/worn off or it may have been a "condemned" model that was rejected by the government and converted for civilian use. Pictures would really help.0 -
Actually the civilian model was produced from the very beginning 1873. The first 170 or so produced, I can't remember the exact number, were civilian sold. After that civilian SAA's were made intermittently during the production of the militia ones. The only difference was that of the martially marked US for the military. I can't remember the exact number of civilian ones produced in the first 34,000 but it was in the thousands. I'll try looking it up if no one else chimes in. 0 -
I found the total of civilian Colt 1873's produced in the first 8000 production as 652 according to "Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec & Fenn 0
