Works better with a bayonet. Might add some muzzle velocity of significance and accuracy due to longer sight radius.

Back in the late 19th Century. There were 2 barrel lengths for military rifles. The Infantry rifle with a approximately 30" barrel length. And the Cavalry carbine with a approximate 18" barrel.

It wasn't until the early 20th Century, that the compromise approximate 24" barrel came into use. Some armies never adopted it, they soldiered on with the 18" & 30" barreled rifles and carbines.
