Take off the wood. Spray the tape with WD-40. If it doesn't come right off, spray again then wrap it in a plastic bag for a few days. You could try GooGone, Kroil, lighter fluid (fire), 70% rubbing alcohol (beware of rust/fire).

Ronsol lighter fluid. You know the kind you put in Zippos. Also that Orange Oil goof off thing. Smells good, too.

Some of the solvents suggested should do the trick and you said its only the barrel and reciever. Any stubborn areas can be cleaned off with some oiled up 0000 steel wool also.

What ever method you try, try in a small spot first.

WD-40 has worked well for me, but you might have to let it soak for a while.

Acetone. (try nail polish remover, which most have Acetone in them)

Clean rag at all times, otherwise it will smear.

    Best of luck

Any organic solvent will probably work OK, including all of above.

The issue is mostly safety. . .ie lighter fuel/naphtha will work, but it gives off tons of fumes, and obviously isn't the most safe substance to be spraying around!

I like the idea of WD-40 or Goof off, both of which are safe for indoor use, and aren't all that toxic.

varsol if you can find it, almost like kerosene, not sure if it will harm the blue though. I used this on some duct tape residue left on a soft top on my sons jeep. The glue just rolled up in little balls and you could pick them off, most everything else I tried just smeared the sticky glue.

Not to hijack, but would a heat gun (or hair dryer) work? I've seen that work on decals and labels.

As one member mentioned "Steel wool ". Bad advise. If you need to get that aggressive in your cleaning. Go to your local hardware paint section and get some triple 000 Bronze wool. Much less chance of
damaging your guns blue metal finish.

Heat, such as a hair dryer, should soften the adhesive enough to remove the tape. There is a product sold at automotive stores that removes adhesive residue without damaging paint.
