Winchester 94-44 chrome receiver
I have the above mentioned gun. I inherited it from my father.
The serial # is 3212725M. Can anyone tell me about this gun. I thought for years it was stainless steel but I've come to decide it might be chrome as there is a crack in it. The barrel is blued and says Winchester Proof Steel. Thank you.

Does a magnet stick to it? Lot of chrome plated guns around, Bubba must have a buddy that worked in a plating shop.
Nickel is known to flake off (starts as a crack). Avoid contact with ammonia containing solvents/cleaners like Hoppe's #90 -
No stainless steel 94's in that era. Chrome or nickel plated. 0 -

Winchester made a run of Pearlitic Malleable cast iron receivers about that time.
This material had great mechanical properties IF HEAT TREATED correctly.
One of the differences is it wont blue conventionally. That is probably why someone refinished the frame by plating.
If the frame is cracked, it's done.0
