Look at part R143, it might serve as the barrel retainer. The barrel could be screwed in or pressed in, I don't know that I ever took one off. Scroll down to the 42m(c)

I'll try that thanks. I don't think the barrel is screwed into the receiver, but perhaps removing that part will allow the barrel to twist/pull out of the receiver.

    Best regards

Contact Victor Havlin thru their website, havlinsales.com.

Vic and his wife Cheryl run the Mossberg Collectors Association, and are real nice people- Vic used to work for Mossberg. They are the go to folks for anything Mossberg, especially older 22s.

Good idea. I have bought parts from them, but never thought to ask them questions. However, I think the previous reply got correct. Thanks again for you response.

Unscrew the barrel/action mounting stud and push the barrel out. Many times it will be loose enough to twist it out. Or you can use a wooden dowel just smaller than the inside diameter of the receiver as a punch. Add some penetrating oil like Kroil or Liquid Wrench.
Sometimes a LITTLE heat on the action and some cold on the barrel, and it falls out.
