English African big game cartridge - likely a custom job; would have great recoil in such a light rifle.

I can find nothing in COTW on a 3" case. The Brits did use .450 as a cartridge designation but they seemed to jump from 2 3/4" to 3 1/4" and the British cases were bottle-necked. The American Sharps cases apparently skipped over the 3", too. You would know from looking at your rifle whether it has a factory barrel and whether the cartridge stamping is over-stamped. Ruger made some strange stuff and, if it looks factory, I'd contact Ruger and ask them about it. If not, you'll need to do a chamber casting. I'm guessing you have a re-chambered .45/70.

Chamber cast would be my choice. I played with a #3 in 45-70 back in the 70's. With full loads "Bruiser" was a shoulder full.

The .450-.400 is a .411 caliber. The Brits write it backwards. We would call it a .400/.450.

    IN gunsmith,

The .450/400 3" was introduced by Jeffery in about 1896 and is a shortened version of the .450/400 Magnum, it was designed as a smokeless round using Cordite and has never been loaded as a black powder cartridge. Before the advent of the .375 H&H Magnum it was considered to be one of the most versatile all round cartridges of its time.

Currently, Kynoch and Hornady both sell loaded ammunition for this chamber and Hornady has brass and bullets as components also. If you do a quick search for ".450/400 NE 3" rifle cartridge" you will find a couple of articles which feature loads for the cartridge as well.

Cabelas used to sell a double rifle by Sabatti which featured this cartridge. Reasonably priced and reasonably controlled recoil in a rifle weighing about 9 lbs.

    Best.

    nononsense,

The OP indicated that his barrel is marked 450/3". Given that; it is doubtful it's a .450/.400 since that's .411 caliber. (Unless he left out the 400!)

    Ambrose,

    quote: I'm guessing you have a re-chambered .45/70.

    You're assuming that it's a re-chambered .45-70, I'm not.

The poster didn't suggest that there were any factory markings or 'x'd out original cartridge markings.

And since the poster hasn't responded back, we're left wondering what the answer could be, lacking a chamber cast and measurements...

    Best.
