Winchester model 1886
I have a rifle that bears the identification "Model 1886" on what I'll call the backstrap (extends to the rear just below the hammer).
On the bottom side of the matching metal is the ser # 317xx. It is a lever action (curved lever), with what looks to be a 5 round magazine, 33 WCF, I have a half box of new ammo (30 years old). The rife meets all the apperances of an 1886 that I have been able to see in a few reference books and on the web. However, it does not have the Winchester name anywhere, nor any other name for that matter. It is all blue, well worn, original appearing wood that is is very good condition. It has been in the family for at least 40 years.
Is this really a Winchester 1886? Where can I get info if it is, how do I prove it with no name? A value?
Thanks. da206

I have parts for a winchester model 1886, basically the barrel reciever the lever and the feeding tube. I am missing quite a few parts, should I try to get replacements or what would I be able to sell this for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 0 -
Winchester would make almost anything a customer desired if they were willing to pay for it. A 22" octagon barrel with a 1/2 mag would have been a special order. The only way you are going to know if it is authentic, is to contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office and pay for a factory letter (or if you are a member, a research sheet). 0 -

A picture of the front sight & muzzle would probably tell us if it was original or not. 0 -

Does anyone know if winchester made a model 1886 in a 45/70 cal 1/2 mag with a 22 inch octagon barrel. Thank you, serial number 76893
I tried to reply to the PM you sent to me, but it was kicked back as "Delivery to the following recipients failed."0 -

There's one with that configuration pictured in Madis' "The Winchester Book", latest edition, p 339, so they made at least one. But like Bert said, only the Museum can tell you if yours came that way from the factory. Good luck with your search. If original, that'd be a nice, valuable '86.
