1886 win .40-70 cal,
could use some help locating a bullet mold that would produce a 330 grain cast bullet suitable to use in loading rounds to go through this 1886 Winchester chambered in .40-70. I found the load in "cartridges of the world". I am lead to believe that the projectile comes out of the mold around .405 and the size/lubber will cut it down to .401 all help is appreciated. thanks in advance

Have you slugged the bore or made a chamber cast yet?
I believe that a .405 sized to .401 bullet is going to be way too small. I own several 40-70 caliber Model 1885 high-walls (in 40-70 Ballard, 40-70 Sharps Straight), and the correct bullet weight is 330-grains, and a .407 sized bullet.0 -
You should post in the wanted forum.
I'll look and see if I can find the Lyman bullet mold number for you.

added I think the correct bullet is Lyman 406150 330 gr. I would look at 403173 305 gr shooting as cast or 412263 made for the 405 Win cast soft and sized to your rifle.
I might have some of the 412263 bullet I cast back in the 70's when I was shooting a Win 95 in 405. I borrowed the mold as it was rare even back then.0 -

thanks all for the help. bert, I slugged the barrel and it measured out .403, is that a possibility? also, thanks eastbank for the more than gracious offer.charliemeyer007 if you can find the bullet mold number and post it I will be grateful. I will also look in the wanted forum. thanks all. any more info from any reader will be appreciated 0 -
If your bore slugged at .403, you should try the .405 bullets without squeezing them down. 0 -
Lyman #403169 is currently available thru Midsouth. Produces a .406" 240gr. Bullet. Size to .405 and you will be good to go.
RCBS #40-300-SP-CSA, also currently available, will throw a 300gr. .410" bullet that would also size down to .405".0
