remove chrome finish
I recently picked up an old Springfield parade rifle that doesn't fire but has several parts i can use,but they are chrome plated. Has anyone had experience with a home remedy removing the plating? I don't want to spend more than the parts are worth.

I just now typed "how to remove chrome plating" into my internet address bar and got several hits. Here are a couple:

Muratic acid (dilute HCL)..the same stuff you'd put in a swimming pool will get the job done. It doesn't attack the iron, just the chrome. 0 -
Many thanks I tried some bleach worked a little but but now will try some muratic acid 0 -
Muriatic is what you want, but it WILL attack the steel-so you have to watch it closely. Do it outside. Rinse in water with ammonia. 0 -
I you leave it soaking in I believe Hoppe's, it will dissolve the copper underneath to which the copper is bonded. 0 -
No, it won't. 0 -
I know you have to dilute the acid to clean brick but should you dilute it to remove chrome? and how long to leave parts in the acid?? thanks 0 -
Much decorative chrome plating is plated over nickel. HCl will remove the chrome, but leave the nickel. The strength of the HCl will determine immersion length. 0 -
No matter what you do, you will end up with ugly parts that must be either blued or parked.
If it were me, I'd pay a professional to do the entire job. I'd talk to Chuck in Denver:
