tricks for compressing springs ?
I'm trying reassemble a Winchester 190 that needed a serious cleaning, there was so much build up in it that it wouldn't fire.
The bolt spring with buffer has to compress from ~7" to about 4 1/2" inches with a 1/4" of the buffer inside the hole. If it weren't for that 1/4" I could put the bolt in place first.

Yes,I understand what needs to be done, I just can't get the spring to stay compressed while I put the bolt back in.0 -

I use 'two' screwdrivers and 'walk' the spring into the recess of the stock while the bolt is in place,,,,,,do just a couple of coils at a time. When you have approx. 1/2" remaining you will be able to push the end of the coils down into the rear of the bolt.
The buffer is about 1/4" longer than the space between the rear of the bolt and the hole the spring goes in.0 -

Wyatt, I was able to push the spring and buffer into the stock recess enough to line up and then go into the bolt recess. Maybe yours is an earlier/later variation.
With the bolt in place there's not enough space to do that. The disassembly photos clearly show the front of the bolt has to come out first.0 -

Try this,,,,,,,,,walk the spring rearward as far as possible and hold it there with one of the screwdrivers. Lower the rear of the bolt into the receiver catching the spring/guide in the recess and then push the front of the bolt down allowing it to fall into place under the rails.
Doh! I never thought to check You tube. Someone in another gun group gave me this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1EeX12yKDM which demonstrates what you said. The coils on the spring in mine are much tighter than those in the video, I'll have to find some very thin screw drivers to do this with.0 -
I use a small piece of thin flat stock with a semi-circular notch cut out of it (or a circular hole with the correct diameter) to get the pressure required to compress springs especially small stiff springs - just use a smaller piece of flat stock for the smaller pesky springs. 0
