Colt 1917 barrel swap
Ok I found a barrel finally. Is this something that I can swap out myself or leave it to the pro's? I understand that I would have to build a fixture to hold the frame to keep it from warping and would have to build a barrel wrench with bushings. I have the capabilities for doing this at home. It was brought up when I posted in the want ads looking for a barrel, that they were really tightly threaded. Would moderate heat on the frame and dry ice on the barrel help with installation?
BTW this is a 1917 Colt revolver .45 ACP.

I'm a bit of a gunsmith, mostly stock work, old gun restoration, scope mounting, things of this nature. If that where my 1917, I'd take it to a good gunsmith.

Apply Kroil to both ends of the threads, let it work for several days. Hot and cold will work in your favor.

Interesting video! I didn't even think about looking on youtube. 0 -
If you check out Brownell's website or catalog, you can see what the professionals buy for this kind of job. They have videos on the website that show how to do some types of rebarreling. Most folks find that it's not worth the investment in equipment if you are only going to do 1 or 2 guns. But, it's your decision.

Neal,
I just looked up what I need at Brownells......Ouch! almost $300 in tooling. I can most likely do everything I need on my lathe. This ones going on the back burners for a while. Pretty expensive lesson on "squib" loads.0
