41 not ejecting misfires
I asked about this before and everybody said it was a dirty gun. Not! When the gun misfires the striker stays on the firing pin as the slide is pulled back pushing the shell out of the extractor. Once the gun is cocked and I let the slide go back into battery the extractor engages the misfire and now it will extract. I wish it was just a dirty gun. I have been told this is a design flaw, does anybody have any ideas?

This may sound crazy, but check to see if the barrel is loose in the frame. 0 -
What gun is it 41 ae? 0 -
I hope it's a SW model 41 .22lr target gun.
I haven't shot them in the last 25 years, but did a lot way back when.
They did have a bad/weak extractor system. IIRC, many guys redid the claws and played with the tension.
When it tries to extract a misfire, it is trying to move a heavy shell that weights about 7 times what just an empty case is. And there is no
residual pressure to help push out the cases with a misfire.
This pushes the already iffy ejection to the limit.0 -
S & W Model 41's have been made for almost 60 years. All the bugs have been worked out. When I had one years ago it worked fine, as long as I used ammo it liked. Standard velocity ammo, used for target shooting was marginal. It much prefered and worked better with high speed ammo.
I have noticed online a lot of henny pennies getting their panties knotted, about using high speed ammo in the 41. Don't believe it! The 41 is built like a tank, specially if you install one of the plastic buffers. It goes beyond the ludicrous, that these folks that advocate only using standard velocity ammo. Tell the novices to oil the standard velocity ammo, so that it will function in the 41.
I don't know what kind of ammo you have been using. But give Mini-Mag solids a try. To see if your problems are ammo related.0 -
The rear face of your barrel may be 'coined' from being hit by the slide. This can prevent the rim of the cartridge from seating in the chamber and stopping the slide from going to battery.
The fix is to hand ream the chamber with the correct reamer.
The barrel steel is softer than the slide, which is why this happens over time.
EDIT: I had a problem w/ mis-fires w/ Military issue Winchester white box 22s in my 41. Wasn't the ammo, it was cause by my above post.
If the slide isn't in battery, the firing pin can push the cartridge past the extractor and fail to extract.
Here is a photo of what I referred to as a 'coined' breach face, complete w/ dry fire indent.

The breach face itself on a model 41 is replaceable it is an insert in the slide . The originals are good for at least 250,000 rounds But many military Marksmanship Team members have over 1,000,000 on guns and they do replace this insert from time to time .Yes the gun it self may be clean but have you Removed the EXTRACTOR and cleaned the Extractor and spring & plunger that holds tension on the Extractor. 0 -
Has everyone here who posted noticed he said Not ejecting MISFIRES.
This not a bad ammo or not going in battery problem.
He has extractor/mechanical troubles. Perhaps as Perry said dirt under the parts.
Still waiting on the loose barrel answer, before I expand on that idea.0 -

Yes, I cleaned and even replaced the extractor and it is still the same0 -

I do not see a any dry fire indent, no coining and this has been a problem since it was new. Also replaced slide spring, firing pin and spring and no change.Shortening the firing pin .025 inches did help a little bit with no increase in misfires.0
