Nikon Spot-On experience???
Anyone have any experience with Nikons Spot-On program good/bad?[?]

For what it's worth...I'm not a fan of Nikon in general. Upper range is very good, and everything below is not worth the effort. Look at Vortex and blow off the "program" in favor of a line of scopes that work all around. Best of the West and all of them are OK, but frankly, shooting and judging results beat judging the calculations almost every time. FWIW, IMO. 0 -
My experience(not with Nikon but 2 other brands)with the BDC type reticle is that they're close but not exact. How close depends entirely on your rifle/ammo choice. At best, the "aiming points" are a for reference only and at worst, a worthless distraction. 0 -
I own several Nikon rifle scopes, and even some with the BDC reticle, but have never utilized their Spot On program.
What I can tell you about their BDC reticle, is that the subtensions in the reticle itself, are made, using the law of averages. If you look at an ammo companies ballistic tables, you will find that some classes of standard cartridges have similar trajectories out to 500 yards or so, +/- 3 or 4 inches...in some cases better than that. So the subtensions are set on averages, splitting the difference, between loads. It just has to be, as in this situation, it cannot be a one size fits all, exactly.
If you are after exact, I do suggest going to the dial up method, and getting a good ballistics calculator app for your smart phone. For the most part, any scopes under the $1k range do not have repeatable enough adjustments, to use the dial up method...with one exception, that I have found.
That said, the Vortex Viper PST, is a sleeper, that was passed on to me by a friend on the forums here. It has the clarity, and features of some scopes costing twice as much. Above that, it has extreme repeatability in the adjustments, and a shim style zero stop. If you use the dial up method, you are going to want the zero stop feature.
