1873 Winchester
I picked up a 1873 32 20 here a while back that is a good solid brown and the only bad pitting I have is from about the end of the front sight pretty much all around the barrel to the end of the barrel. A couple of them are pretty deep and I was wonder if there is a product that could be used that would would take a brown/blue, and not look like a fill in. Or just forget it and say it's over a 100 years old.

When did winchester start using the set screw in the common front sight of the 1873 winchester rifles? Thanks Tom 0 -
We can't help over the internet, with safety issues. Best to take it to a competent and knowledgeable gunsmith. For inspection and test firing. Specifically with modern ammo, you intend on using in it. 0 -
most ammo loaded by the MAJOR makers are loaded down to where they are safe to fire in older gun that are in good condition. However there are some like buffalo bore that are loaded hoter and those I would not shoot in a model 73 0 -
Shoot the Cowboy loads, those are lighter loads. 0 -
I shot all my 73's with smokeless ammo. Just have it checked out because you can have problems with any gun you can't see. The big problem with old Winchesters are head space issues because of wear, if someone rechambered it without remarking the gun or the firing pin rust in the firing position.

I checked with Black Hills Ammo and they tell me the cowboy loads are loaded down to shoot about like the black powder ammo to cut down on the recoil for cowboy shooting. I did have the 73 checked out. The smith said the chamber was in really good shape. The case came out in really good shape.
I think a hand grenade and rock would be ok in my 1885's.0
