Small magnum primers
I bought some small magnum primers at a real good price, can they be used where a regular small primer is called for? What about large magnum primers, what are they used for? Thanks

magnum primers are generally used for the slower burning powders 0 -
You need to lower the powder charge if it is a max load. Otherwise just use as normal.
Like 260 says, mag primers are used for slow burning powder.0 -
Magnum rifle primers are also used when employing Ball ("spherical") powders, as they can be hard to ignite or to burn cleanly. 0 -
Not that it makes much difference as the same advice applies, but small magnum rifle OR pistol? Anyway, I stumbled across a combination in this general arena looking for a Hornet load. Ran out of small rifle primers and had CCI small magnum pistol on hand, so loaded 20 and tried them out behind my favorite load of Lil Gun pushing a Sierra Varminter 40 gr. and for ME, it has ceased all load development in the Hornet category. Simply spectacular results in a number of Hornets its been shot from. 0 -
I use CCi #41 primers in most of my AR 15 .223 reloads. That is a magnum strength primer and I find it takes about 0.5-1.0 grain less powder to reach similar velocities vs standard CCI small rifle primers. 0 -
A few years back when primers were tough to get sometimes all that was available were the magnum primers. I didn't shy away from them. When primer stocks recovered often the old stock of magnum primers were marked down so I picked some up as "backup stock" for the next primer shortage. 0
