Two Generations. First, were subcontracted by Gun Parts Corp. Who owned Auto Ordnance at the time. They were US made, serviceable but a little on the rough side. They were low cost, entry quality guns.

Second, was after Kahr bought Auto Ordnance from Gun Parts Corp. Supposedly they were better quality than the originals. I haven't had any hands on experience, with them though. Not sure if they are even still on the market any more? Or even if the Kahr's were U.S. made, like the original Auto Ordnance's?

Likely the PI made Rock Island guns, have eaten Kahr's lunch. And their 1911's aren't even on the market any more.

My first 1911 was a AO, bought about '89. Used it in USPSA matches until bought a SA. Sold it to a local guy and he is still shooting it after all these years [^]
Heard that when AO was shutting down there were some real bad assemblies on them.

If you do a SEARCH on the forums for "Auto Ordnance", you will get a lot of opinions/experiences.

I don't think that either company that sold them advertised exactly who made/assembled the guns. Just assume that any example you buy is a "basic level" gun that may need 1 or 2 visits to the gunsmith.

I had an AO 1911a1 government style for over 7 years till I traded it to a friend.
It was just what is it was supposed to be...a new GI issue style 1911.
Always worked, gave decent accuracy, didn't mind being in and out of a leather hosteler.

It wasn't a race gun, lite weight carry piece, NRA bullseye gun, or pretty safe queen.

I would buy another if found at a decent price.

I have a 2006 built auto ordnance built 1911a1 ww2 style. Great gun...after Kahr bought them. All the Kahr built guns are stamped worchester, mass. I have had no issues with mine. They are still made and in my opinion are a high value shooter.
