I'm reasonably sure it has internals that make it save to carry with a full cylinder. I don't remember if it's a hammer block or a transfer bar. I'll go look at the schematic to be sure.

You will need to provide more info to date it, serial number and city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Wesson_Firearms

cut and pasted "When was my Dan Wesson manufactured?

The serial number data provided in the PDF below is based on information provided by members of the Dan Wesson Forum. No records are available from the various Dan Wesson companies, and we rely records/recollections of original purchasers, paperwork retained with the pistol, dated barrel wrappers, etc. to determine an approximate date of manufacture" they have a PDF file. google Dan Wesson forum.

added I think part #44 functions as a transfer bar even though it labeled as a connector. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/DanWesson-33200/14-35940.htm?results=All

Dan Wesson's that I have shot, all shoot good. I think it is due to the barrel being under tension. Fit and finish seems to vary a lot, nice ones are nice others not so much.

Safe to carry with full cylinder. Transfer bar system.

Have had a DW Mdl 15 since 1976. About the most accurate revolver I have ever owned. They are very much underappreciated. Durable as a tank, mine has a quality of bluing you used to see on really good Colts.

Quality of the DWs is reported to vary as they went thru changes on management.

Your Model 14 is safe to carry with 6 rounds, I don't think any Dan Wesson was built without a transfer bar system.

The Model 14 is a fixed sight version of the more common Model 15 which has adjustable sights. Although the barrel and barrel shrouds from a Model 15 will fit and work on a Model 14 you should be careful due to the different front sight height on the Model 15. I do not remember whether the Model 14 had removable front sights, the 15 does and the front blade can be swapped out with different colors and, particularly necessary on the 12" and 15" barrels, with lower sight blades.

At one time I think I saw a statistic of 75% of all silhouette shooters used Dan Wesson's because of the accuracty. Not just because the barrel is in tension as mentioned earlier but also because you can adjust the BC gap from a nominal 0.006" down to virtually nothing. And, still shoot.

You must get a barrel tool, it will have all the hex wrenches as well as the tool for the recessed nut on the barrel, then you can properly clean, adjust, and swap barrels properly.

    Enjoy !!

I was also wondering if the model 14 could have adjust sights put on it, and whether I could buy a model 15 barrel and use the colored front sights that can be removed. Is this the best way to upgrade to a model 15 style without buying another gun. I love the model 14. It's extremely accurate and looks almost new. I just like the way the colored sights look on the model 15's, and wondered if a barrel change would help solve the problem, but can a model 14 be drilled and tapped to install an adjustable sight?

    Thanks for any help.

I would advise against alteration. The Dan Wessons have become collectable and IIRC the 14 was made in smaller numbers than the 15 adjustable sight model, so while it may not make much difference now, down the line rarity might add to collectablity.

I've never heard of anyone who has even attempted to do what you asking.
The top of the Dan Wesson frame in this case is all wrong.
