I think Arsenal makes the best AK.

Not that there is anything inferior about the ones you already own. But, if you drive a Porsche, Tesla, Mercedes, or BMW, then the best is none too good for you.

Your MAC 90 is not a bad choice as it is but I like the Arsenal SA 93 a lot better account milled parts.[:)][:D]

    "Best" in what way?

What may be the "best" for you isn't necessarily the "best" for me.

IMO, what you want is something reliable, that has the ergonomics and other features YOU want (sights, stock, grip, etc). Note that cost *IS* a "feature".

That could be an inexpensive Romanian AK, it could be an expensive custom build.

And note that most AKs can be customized to better suit you, if you're so inclined.

A $1000 AK may be "better" in certain ways than a $400 one, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to benefit from the advantages.

With respect to milled receivers in general, sure they're stronger. . .but they're also heavier and usually more expensive. There may be an accuracy benefit. . .there may not. But since probably 99%+ of stamped AK receivers never have receiver problems, is a milled receiver really "better"?

You have a fine one in the Mak 90.

It has been debated several times here, but I prefer the Milled receiver like your MAK 90. Arsenal is by far, the most popular quality builder. There is another newby on the block, that is all made in the USA, with a milled receiver. They list for around $900.00, and for the life of me cannot remember their name. They look to be pretty nice too.

I tend to stay away from anything that says Century Arms, or Hesse/Blackthorn/Vulcan Arms on it. The latter three, are the same folks, different/changed company name, to try to outrun quality.

    Best

    EDIT 1

Siaga might be the world standard for, and best stamped receiver, and are in close competition with the VEPR.

However this asked for the BEST...The best is the Poly Tech Legend, and that is followed closely by the Bulgarian milled recievers, and the likes of the MAK 90

    Poly Tech,

Heat treated milled steel receiver, chrome lined cold hammer forged match barrels. Probably about the best, but you'll need deeeeep pockets, they run $3 to $4K.

According to Red Jacket in Louisiana Saiga AK is the world standard of AKs. They only use Saiga magazines. They don't rattle or have any vices. I haven't put that many rounds through it as I am saving what I have.

I've bought about a dozen. The 'best' is the milled Bulgarian, the worst was a WASR-10. Saigas are excellent. The MAK-90 and the NHM-91's, are very good. The sleeper in the bunch is the WASR-10/63. These are not commercially-made guns like the usual WASR-10's, but are original production Romanian military guns from the '60's and '70's that have been 're-receivered'. The entire front ends, bolt, and bolt carrier are match-numbered from the original, with the arsenal mark and DOM stamped on the front trunnion. Consequently, everything is a straight and properly fitted assembly, but with a receiver made as semi-auto.

I haven't had one of the Yugo-made guns, but Zastava has made everything else in their line to be of good quality.

Saiga's can be made to accept standard mags, but the conversion includes making a bullet guide to install in the bottom of the front trunnion (not difficult). I made two of mine from sections of Suomi SMG receivers (the radius was just right, and the material was excellent). The third was made from flat stock, as Saiga trunnions differ. I also added enough U.S.-made parts to the Saigas, to make them ATF-compliant.

I can't see spending a Grand, to come up with a real decent AK.

Like the guys say, avoid anything from the Jersey or Virginia muffler shops.
