    Barrel isn't a .308 standard.

added Well stated TriumphGuy. There are a lot of rifles I'd rather pack around than a P-14 or P-17. When I was a kid they were referred to collectively as "Slugs".

added 2 I have shot a slug converted to 375 H&H, and they did nice work. I think your plan to check the chambers is good. I'd try and get the all of the throat too.

You would have a wildcat; call it a .303 Norma.
Get a reamer ground with a .308 Norma body but a slightly larger neck and throat for .303 bullets and you are off and running.

Standard .303 barrel is .312 inches. We measure groove to groove, they measure land to land. A standard .308 bullet fired out of a .312 barrel will lousy accuracy.

It could be rechambered to several cases but the P14 has a couple disadvantages: 1 the barrel is .303"/.311" so .300"/.308" bullets won't work well. and 2. the boltface is set for the rimmed .303 Brit and would need altering to fit a rimless case.

Please don't cut up and ruin another P-14. Too many have been "sporterized" at costs far greater than just buying a good, modern bolt-gun in a common caliber. These guns are heavy, clunky, and awkwardly configured, all the characteristics that endear them to collectors and shooters of militaria. Enjoy it as-is. .303 Brit brass and bullets are cheap, plentiful and can be configured to do just about anything, except driving a bullet 300 fps faster. There was a time for these sorts of conversions made sense, when few commercial bolt actions were available, but it is long gone.

"the boltface is set for the rimmed .303 Brit and would need altering to fit a rimless case."

The 303 rim is .530 same diameter as is listed for belted magnum cartridges.

Well i should have jumped in sooner with the whole story I was given 2 p14 barreled actions with 308 norma stamped on one and 300 H&H on the other they look to be original barrels with proof marks and all and the chambers are bright but I don't have any more info. nether bolt quite closes on a magnum go gauge. so I guess its time to get out the cerrosafe and go from there. however the ears are milled off and receivers are tapped. all nice work so its hard to imagine whoever did this not knowing any better

Saw a post about another one like that.
May have been chambered to accept ammo on hand without the formality of a headspace gauge.
If you are lucky they are 1917 barrels.
If P14 barrels you may have a semi-wildcat as I described.

Also, as with any military barrel, do yourself a favor and slug the thing. A lot of military barrels might theoretically call for a certain diameter bullet (in this case .311-.312") but when you slug it, you find that it was wartime, they used the rifling cutter a little too long, and it's .315, .318, whatever. Shame to do up a nice custom gun and find that it won't shoot worth jack.

First thing to do is verify that the bolt faces are still cut for rimmed rounds and go from there. Second thing is the cerrosafe cast.

Are you sure they're not P-17 (originally 30/06)? Those rechamberings were fairly common.
