    .427 seems large for a 41 bore. Is it a rim or center fire cartridge?

    Don't know the answer, though I do know that .44 magnum, .44 special, and .44 Russian all take .429" bullets. Case mouth diameter is .457".

    How about posting some pictures of this gun? Close ups of the proof marks might help.

    Without images, at best you're going to get educated guesses, and you might not even get those.

    If 5 shot it's probably British .442 revolver caliber, aka ".44 Webley" and maybe one of the many Belgian semi-copies of Webley's "British Bull Dog" model.
