Expert Awesomeness
Lately I have been delving into some areas of gunsmithing that are new to me, namely Smith revolvers and 1911's.
The depth of knowledge and patience of those answering my simple questions is refreshing. This world seems very short on people with "know how".
Thank you everybody for participating in the "Ask the Experts" forum. I try to contribute as much as I can, but still feel humbled by the expertise exhibited here.
Again, thank you. Have a great day, all! [^]
Well, turns out the extarctor had a sharp corner at the bottom of the groove. Lot of brass stuck to it. As suggested, I carefully reformed the sharp corner to a smooth radius. Function improved dramatically. Tension seemed about right, a loaded cartridge slipped under the extractor remained in place regardless of slide position.
2nd range test: functioning much better. Using light 200 gr SWC loads. Maybe a touch heavier recoil spring, as the slide failed to fully close 3 or 4 times.
Yes, there are scuff marks. I polished the slide interior in the locking lug area to smooth up the travel over the barrel shroud. What else can I do?

We did a how-to video on that and a few other 1911 things awhile back.

Congrats on your fix! Good thing you didn't ask about 270 cast loads......[}:)] 0 -
Good work. Have check the ammo in the chamber by perryshooter method? I have made shim washers for the spring guide to simulate a heavier recoil spring, but I much prefer to cut a strong one down to fit the load.
Can you post a good close up pic of the double radiuses extractor.0
