Like your opinion on what a S&W 581 .357 4" barrel in near mint condition, 96%+ would be worth. Thanks in advance for any replies.

  Well, directing the OP to completed listings is the only way to accurately answer his value question.
  
  His post shows how difficult it is to judge condition; first he says "near mint", then he says "96+%". MY way of thinking is, "near mint" should be 99% or better. I'd call "96+" very good condition.
  
  Every year the Blue Book of Gun Values has a section in front with photos & Mr Fjestad's opinion of condition; that has helped me a lot.

  $550 give or take $50.
  
  A little more if you've got the original box and papers.
