1895 Marlin re-barrel
I've noticed the rim dimension on a 348 Win case is just slightly larger than a 45-70 Govt case. I've wondered, would it be possible, practical and reasonable to even think of re-barreling an 1895 Marlin to this. I realize the cost is everything in terms of being practical. I'm asking in terms of the design and mechanics of the action. I like my 45-70's but that .348 just talks to me.

I'm sure if you throw enough money at the problem it will work. I got shoot a 71 that went threw a fire and was converted to 50-110. A friend made a few Siamese Mauser's into an 8mm-348 wildcat.
Finding a barrel blank in .348 might be interesting.0 -
I know what you are saying, and have been there, but on a different avenue.
For what it is worth, when loaded to what its potential in the 1895 Marlin, or newer 1886 Winchesters(the ones from Miroku), the 45-70 Gov't., is just plain hard to ignore when compared to what the 348 Winchester will do.
On the otherhand, compared to the price of conversion, you would be better off getting a Nice Winny 71, already in 348.
But money talks..

Thank-you gentlemen. These ideas hit me every now and then. Like I said I really like a 45-70. My 1895 Marlin is waiting for a trip to the range to work up an accurate peep-sight load. 0 -
The first thing I would do is to see if the Marlin magazine tube would pass a .348 rim.
If it didn't you could make it a .33 WCF, an underappreciated round.0 -
The 33 win is certainly underrated! 0
