There is a great article in the new Handgunner magazine by John Taffin on page 42, that talks about your question. According to John, his Remington cap & ball revolver likes .459 round balls.
I'm thinking your best bet would be to mic the barrel, the forcing cone and the mouth of the chambers. This is the key to getting single action revolvers to shoot. Read Mike "Duke" Venturino and John Taffin's books on shooting single action revolvers, you will learn a bunch.

    The 44 isn't 44 at all. It's 45 caliber.
Ruger guns use large balls and Colt and Rem originals and copies shoot
450,451. and maybe a little larger.
Original barrel bores you may find are around .460 but shoot bullets sized to cylinder bores very well.
Repro barrel bores you may find are 450-451.
You need to measure what you have in cylinder and barrel bores.
Be sure to measure all cylinder bores as they may vary.
