I just buy brass, usually Norma.

Thanks Charlie. I read the other forum postings. I have an opportunity to buy a CH 6.5 Jap Forming die with the thought of selling the formed brass. You saved me!

Out of curiosity how much were they asking for the dies and what was the did it consist of?

I have a 2 die set for 30-30 to 22 Savage HiPower that I think was originally $200

    added $260 now http://www.huntingtons.com/store/home.php?cat=77

    30-06 to 6.5 jap $384 http://www.huntingtons.com/store/product.php?productid=17794&cat=580&page=1

they aren't actually forming dies, but they accomplish the same thing. I have a rifle chambered in 22/30-30 Ackley. So to change the 30-30 cases to 22 I run them through a 25-35 die that has the expander button removed. Then through a 22 Sav HP, also expander button removed. then into the 22/30-30 sizer die. then prime and charge with a few grains of pistol powder and some filler. Aim up, fire; then resize and it's formed.

I think the 6.5 could be formed from a cartridge with similar sized base using a similar process with intermediate dies; but I don't know what cases would work.

Back in the day (before Norma brass in 6.5 was around), .35 Remington was used as a 'parent' case.

Yep, used a .300 Savage die as the in between step.

Norma is overpriced. Grafs sells PRVI brand that's good quality brass at an affordable price. Norma is great stuff, but I get it when I want precision reloads, not for an old war horse with crummy sights.

Before the PRVI stuff came out, I got a bunch of formed brass from .243 and .308. Interestingly, whatever they did to 'form' it, while it loaded fine the first time, every time I resized FL, it squeezed a ring down until I had what looked like a belted magnum... which wouldn't chamber. Nothing a file and a drill with the case chucked in it couldn't remove, but more trouble than it was worth.

Just get some PRVIs, my two cents.

My uncle Dutch was an Occupation MP. Somewhere over in the CBI he acquired a 6.5. He said that rifle shot good. In fact he said that it would clip weeds as far as you see them. He had helmet liners of ammo and shot the rifle until it was hot you couldn't hold the wood and yet it still shot good.

Also the smokeless powder used in it was more smokeless than his issue 06.

I have a 6.5 from him, not sure if it is a good shooter yet or if it was the one he spoke about. I'd much rather shoot the 8mm Mauser from Uncle Tang. All milled steel with nary a tool mark, the Arisaka is rough.
