Colt AR-15 Sporter Target R6601 questions
I saw a Colt AR-15 Sporter Target Model 6601 for sale at my local gun store. The serial number is ST 00069XX. It has a flash hider but no bayonet lug. The stock and hand guard are the standard full-size types. It is not a heavy barrel (HBAR). The handle is fixed with target dials. Condition is about 95%. I know very little about AR's except what little I remember from the military in the early 1970's. What can you tell me about this model. Is it a good one to own and what is the value in your opinion. I have looked on the auction side but there are very few sold. The shop is asking $900. Thanks for any information.

Data provided is inconsistent with what my book (The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide by Walt Kuleck) says.
The NAME of a Colt AR is WHATEVER IS STAMPED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER. Colt made a SPORTER TARGET, but it was not an AR-15 & it was not Model 6601.
The MODEL NUMBER of a Colt is WHATEVER IS PRINTED ON THE BOX END LABEL. Are you saying that this rifle comes in the original box with the original end label?
Without an expert inspection, I wouldn't pay > $500-600. At 95%, it would not be considered collectible".

EDIT: All of that makes sense; it sounds like it is a 6551. If it looks as good as it sounds, that's a good price. I think I'd jump on it, even at the asking price. With a 1:7 twist, it will do well with heavier bullets.
EDIT2: There are a couple of states that prohibit the "importation" of AR's that were made > 1994, & I believe that the rifle we are discussing is one of those specifically permitted. Actual sale prices have been as high as $1,400, even though those of us in free states could buy a "better" new rifle for far less.0 -
As I said earlier, I know very little about AR's. It is not marked as an AR-15 so I guess it is not one. On the left receiver is COLT and their trademark and SPORTER Target Model. There is no box, so no information there. The rifle looks almost like new and shows no obvious wear. I guessed at 95% condition because the box is missing and I wanted to be conservative. It looks like a gun that was made last year, not one made 2 decades ago.The owner was pretty sure that it was a R6601 and thought it was made in the early 1990's. I'm not so sure it's a R6601. Could it be a R6551 instead? That's about all the information I have. I was also told that the barrel diameter is smaller under the hand guard. The barrel length appeared to me to be about 20 inches. Thank you for any and all information on this rifle as I like it a lot and am seriously considering a purchase. My interest is not as a collector piece but as a shooter. 0 -
I would not pay that much for a fixed carry handle A2 and for something to shoot you can pick up a new S&W sport II and have a flat top with sights for $200 less 0
