..And I assume it has to be to an FFL on his end?

Yes, needs to be TO a FFL. It can be returned directly to you without going thru a FFL.

And as Perry said- you can only ship UPS or FedEx- and they require NEXT DAY AIR.

OTOH, a DEALER can mail a handgun to another dealer by US Mail. Expect FedEx to run you about $70 or so. It may be cheaper to find a dealer that you can pay to mail it for you.

When they wrote the postal regs they left us 03 C&R folks out.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and money. By giving it to a local FFL, in your immediate vicinity to ship.

Where I live it only runs me $25/$35 dollars to ship a handgun. If I were to use the robbers at FedEx or UPS, to ship it myself. It would run probably $60 to $75.

The gunsmith in PA should have a FFL, if he is in the business. If he doesn't, it might present difficulties?

As a aside, I had a Model 37 years ago. That went out of time. They are made for carrying, not sustained shooting. If this is the problem with yours? Don't waste your money trying to get it fixed. The aluminum frame stretches, if shot alot. No matter what this guy in PA tells you. Once the frame goes bad, because it's to soft. Only 100% fix is a new frame.

Since licensed type 01 FFL's can use the USPS I find it cheaper to pay my FFL a small fee, and the cost for priority mail and have him ship it. He charges me $20, and priority mail is $20 or less, so $40 usually covers it. If you use FedEx or UPS you need to ship from a hub, not a local franchise store, and it will cost you about $60-$80.

..No, that's not the issue. It's been back to S&W for internals
before. This is just for grip fitting by one of our esteemed
wood workers here on the forums. The grips were just a hair off,
as he didn't have a square butt J frame for fitting. I know an FFL
that will probably send it for me for about $15 or less. (good friend!) Thanks.

If the guy who you are sending the Smith back to in PA, doesn't have a FFL? Might have to send it first to a FFL in PA. Depends on your local friend with the FFL.

    Hold on a minute.

We need you to say the words, "The guy who will fit my grips has an FFL."

..Can't do it. You know this gentleman. I only have a year on him
on GB and I've been here since 2003. Anyway, I think I've found an
alternative to sending him the gun(s).
