I had a lady call me out of the blue today and offer to sell me a Marlin 1892. She said she took it to a gun dealer and they told her it was a 32. I'm guessing based on that a 32 rimfire, or convertible. I haven't seen it yet, she is supposed to text me some pictures later and if I like what I see I can go look at it. She said she's thinking around $400 for this. Given the difficulty in finding ammunition, what do the experts say on this? If in person it looks reasonably clean with a good bore is it worth it, or would you all pass?

Need quality close-up photos, for a informed opinion.

That said. If factory original, in very good or better condition? Jump on it.

Unfortunately this isn't likely. If she has peddled it around, to a bunch of gun stores already? Likely it's in sad shape. The $400 is a pie in the sky figure. They told her that t was worth, to get her out the door.

Could be the one that if you change the firing pin it converts from 32 rimfire to 32 S&W. There are 32 rimfire re-loading cases. Personally it's a wall hanger as far as being worth shooting.

added Sorry I was about 8 when dad acquired one, it could very well be 32 Colt.

"firing pin it converts from 32 rimfire to 32 S&W.".............this is incorrect, a different firing pin will convert it to .32 COLT (there is a considerable difference) check under the butt plate for this

    NO.
There was a gunzine writer who converted one to .32 S&W Long. It beat up the locking shoulder in short order.
The gun is strong enough for .32 RF and .32 Colt and that is about it.

Thanks for the replies. She texted me a few pictures. No blueing left, the whole rifle has a patina. The stock looks like it may have been exposed to a fire or something. The finish is heavily crazed, to within an inch or so of the receiver. No caliber marking on the barrel, but she said the gun store told her they thought it was a 32. So I'm guessing rimfire. She only took it to one place, and I don't know which place that was, but there is an indoor range in Clovis, CA that might be the place. I've only been in there once and they didn't seem like the sharpest guys in the world. Definitely not gunsmiths, at any rate. She said they looked it up online and told her it was worth $600 to $900, but they didn't make her an offer on it, apparently. I'm going to call her in the morning and tell her thanks, but no thanks. I'll pass. If it was 32-20 I'd probably take a chance on it, but I don't think that's what it is.
