youth air rifle suggestions
looking for an air rifle for my 10 son to start shooting. just had his intro classes and the league starts in jan. He is small, so size and weight are a factor. Want something good so he can compete, but not to expensive, since we will probably need to cut the stock and if he sticks with it, probably will out grow it quick at his age. I seen the cmp has the used daisy m853 for 100. Willing to spend more for something better, or is that a good place to start.
Thanks

Congratulations. I would have him try the stuff others bring to that first shoot. You can mail order air guns almost everywhere and have it in a week or less. If you cut the stock and save the piece you can put it back. Something with a good trigger and sights would be high on my list.
I was like 7 when I started with one of those heavy, fat barreled, 22 LR, magazine fed, full sized bolt action Remington target rifles. Prone and sitting were my only options as the rifle was way to big and heavy for me. At 10 I would sling it on my back and bicycle out of town to go hunting with it. I became quite the rabbit sniper with it.0 -
I got a Daisy 853 from a forum Member for my son a way back. He started out in JROTC. After 5 years it needed an needed a gas seal. Still going strong. He still shoots it, more so than his 22, it's cheaper.
The stroke might be kind of long and hard for a young guy. but at 10 yearsit might be ok.0 -
Well good for you. I started my 10 yr. old grandson with MY Sheridan Silver Streak which is still VERY accurate. Whatever, keep with it[:)] 0 -
Hello - I was an air gun (rifle & pistol) instructor for Missions Trail Shooters Club youth program at the guard armory. The Daisy 853 was the rifle(s)& the 777 was the pistol(s) used. When we lost the use of the armory due to "liability" reasons they were transferred to other clubs. They were very serviceable air guns. Best Regards - AQH 0 -
Son bought one of the CMP air rifles for Grandson to shoot in 4-H competition last year. Of Course, Son and I had to "try it out" and found it capable of cloverleaf accuracy @ 10 meters. Will likely be difficult for "He is small, so size and weight are a factor." to cock so expect to do the cocking and loading for the shooter at least the first year. Not a problem for our use as the younger group is required to have a loader anyway.
The only thing I didn't like was the forward sling attachment.0
