My buddy got a pair for Christmas several years. Not very impressive for the price. His brother bought a pair of Alpen for like 1/3 the price and they were way clearer.

    Look real hard at Steiner

What is the use? Scouting game? Boating? Birding? Neighbor's hot tub?

Might want to look on the auction side, advanced search, for "binoculars" with seller "sportsmanssupply". Looks like the they have some Leupold 10x42 that are going for reasonable prices.

I did not check out the specs or reviews on those, but based on brand thought I'd point them out for your consideration.

In that price range you are simply not going to get the very best glass, but it will be better than anything you could get at any price in 1970. 10 x 40 is not the best choice, more power is compromised by a smaller objective yielding a smaller exit pupil and a darker image. You will really be straining at the edges of the day to pick out that deer.

You can go with lower power and larger objective and get more light to your eye.

Take a look at these: http://www.bushnell.com/hunting/binoculars/trophy-xtreme/8x56mm

Go to www.eurooptic.com and check there. He has several listings on the auction side as well. He has most high end there, but you will be able to find your budget there also.
