I own a remington 870 from the early 70s with a 3 " chamber and 30" full choke. This gun has sat in the rack all winter except for maybe 2 or 3 times to wipe it down. The other day I took it off the rack and the rib is slightly canted and will not line up flush with the receiver. Any ideas why this would happen? The barrel nut is tight and with the barrel nut off the barrel will line up flush once I tighten the barrel nut it is slighy tilted to the left.

    2 3/4" or 3"?? Not really sure there's a diff but I'd bet a 3 1/2" uses a longer FP.
Personally, I've never seen a FP "wear out". Suggest you clean the bolt and carrier and move the FP by hand to see how much protrusion you'
    re getting.

Did it ever go bang? Examine both ends of the pin to look for signs of a piece being broke off. When up pull the trigger you hear a good hammer strike. You have tried some other brand of factory ammo and there are light or no indications of the firing pin hitting the primer.

    +1 for a good cleaning.

It appears there are longer ones.

How's the firing pin return spring?? If its broke, the pieces will wind into each other and not look broken.

I've tried every thing everyone has suggested.. Pin spring is not broken.. It's just a 3 inch not a 3 and 1/2.. Yes it went bang before it just quit one day.. Pin doesn't look broken.. Have cleaned it and makes no difference.. Going to look further to see if a 3 1/16 pin is available from Remington..

I think you have an issue with the bolt fully closing.

YES, I also beleave its a bolt not closing all the way. Do you have another barrel that can be used. If not , maybe you can borrow one from a friend. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks one and all for the input.. Will see if it might be the bolt not making a good lock up..

When you pull the trigger does the hammer drop, hit the pin and dent a primer?? I'd start from the beginning and work forward..could it be the ammo?? If this gets locked after 10 replies, as per the forum rules, start a new thread as "870 part 2", or something close..

in the last year I've seen 3 Rem. 870's with the 'nose' of the ejector housing broken off. This 'nose' indexes the barrel to seat properly in the action, if the barrel doesn't index properly the bolt will not go completely forward and the gun just goes 'click.
