Appx Value of old pistol
I have an old pistol, break-front 38S&W cal with "defender special" and "38S&WCTCE" on one side of the barrel and "POLITIE" on the other side of the barrel. Stamped on the handle frame is "J4473." It is in about 75% with little good blueing and hammer has several blemishes.
Thanks I am thinking of selling it.

60-90, not a Smith as you know. Just an old pistol in the old caliber.imo 0 -
The most common 38 S & W revolvers marked Defender, are the Harrington and Richardson's. They were made in a number of different barrel lengths. And were made as late as the 70's. Never seen one with a "Politie" marking? This marking is usually associated with European police handguns.
The H & R Defenders aren't big buck collectors guns. The police usage might increase it's value though?

I have actually shot one without muffs,[B)] whew,,LOUD! 0 -
It almost certainly is marked "Police" not "Polite".
The above pictured gun is one of my all time enigmatic favorites.
In my opinion a great carry piece.

"Politie" is French for "police".
