I like Energy Release ER in the truck oil, I can hear the difference.

You should be careful. Putting synthetic oil in an old engine can kill it by cleaning out the old deposits.

I am also concerned about the toxicity of some of the new wonder products - did they get tested in the aerosolize form that they become when slamming about in an autoloader.

The American Rifleman ran a article some years ago That recommended automotive solvents and lubricants not be used on firearms. The reason being that unknown chemicals could cause damage to both wood and metal surfaces. Also, the lubricating properties were not tested and known in firearms.

If you check the links they make special products for firearms.

AR4400 LP hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) firearms oil lubricates and protects against wear and corrosion. AR4400 LP is formulated with nano hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) which has been selected for its ability to bond with metal alloys, filling in asperities to create an extremely low friction dry film which protects against wear and corrosion. The resulting surface composition resists carbon, copper and lead buildup making AR4400 ideal for maintaining a firearm once cleaned. AR4400 emits no odor. AR4400 LP is not a firearms cleaner. Use AR4200 CLP for firearms cleaning.

    hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)

This is being used as a bullet coating to reduce friction similar to other types of slick coatings. The difference is that h-BN is a light white coating and is dry to the touch unlike moly.

    Best.

    No hands on experience.

Obviously, there are other ingredients in there, but boron nitride by itself is relatively harmless. Its used in cosmetics, and baby lotions, for example. You can read about actual testing and data review here: http://www.cir-safety.org/sites/default/files/Boron%20Nitride_faa-final.pdf, but I'm not concerned about toxicity issues with that compound.

"Would" I use these? Sure, if someone handed me a bottle, I'd use it on my car or gun.

Question is would I *BUY* these. Answer, probably not. Its not because I don't think these products "work". . .I'm sure they do decrease friction, and probably do, therefore, decrease engine or gun wear, and they probably do work better (in some ways) than conventional lubricants.

The reason why not is because they address a "problem" that I don't have.

Haven't yet worn out any firearms via high volume shooting, nor had one jam for a reason I think is attributable to lubrication failure. I'm not saying this "can't" happen. . .I'm not not aware of it happening to me, and I don't think it will. .

If I were operating a given gun under super-demanding circumstances (eg full auto, in the desert, in a situation where normal maintenance would be difficult, where spare parts are unavailable, etc), then something like this would have more appeal, and I'd be more inclined to buy this.

Ditto for cars. Maybe one of these additives will reduce engine wear by 50% (or whatever number) compared to "normal" high performance lubricants. I don't know, though I do think its at least plausible.

What I do know is that I generally don't own vehicles long enough for engine failure to be a factor. Again, if I were running some car where I couldn't get/do regular maintenance, where parts or a replacement vehicle were impossible to get, or just putting ridiculous numbers of miles on it, then something like this would be a lot more attractive.

Exactly so cheap Chinese Lawn mowers or gas(3600rpm) generators would be cost effective! Heck they have one time oil now recommended in my last mower engine! No plug for oil removing so a 12 ounce bottle @20 bucks may be worth it!

In a gun you may get a longer shot if your barrel was oiled before the big hunt also!

    Later serf
