    Says 1971.

This +P "rating" business is greatly overblown. In 1939 they listed the Detective Special for .38-44 High Velocity which was +P+ at least.
But there aren't many places to get a Colt revolver fixed any more, either.

I can't tell if it starts with a B or an 8 looks like B33017
I will be greatful for any help.

I just picked up a DS with 742XXX serial number dating to 1958 - which is why I bought it, I also date to 1958.[:D]

If your serial number starts with an 8 the Colt database says 1963. In 1966 the DS went from a full length grip frame to a shorter grip frame, same as found in the Agent. So, if your DS has a grip frame that runs the full length of the wood grips I'd say that's an "8" and the gun was made in a 1963. If the metal grip frame is abbreviated and the wood grips meet below then I'd say it's a "B" and made in 1971.
