Adjusting the recoil spring??
Just picked up a nice rifle with a Litschert SpotShot 8X scope on it. How much tension should be put on the recoil spring. I'll be shooting this on a .22 Hornet.
Also what is the purpose of the recoil spring on these external adjustment scope.
Any help would be appreciated.

If it shoots good then it was likely set up correctly. Recoil, the old scopes didn't handle heavy recoil really well, external shock absorber. Your hornet is practically no recoil.
added. I would have some pressure holding it in place. It will not take much, your hornet generates little recoil.
When taking things apart, I try and think about putting them back together.0 -
Here's the problem... I replaced the reticle and had to disassemble the scope from the mounts, so I'm starting from "square 1". 0 -
Theoretically, the purpose of the spring was to return the scope to the same position after every shot.
But, some "olde tyme" target shooters (& military snipers) didn't believe in that, they just removed the spring & manually pressed the scope forward after every shot.
Charlie's advice sounds good to me; at least, you will be able to maintain the "vintage" look.
